Great effort to walk through this challenge :) thanks a lot,
I just wanted to add few notes here might help others
    1. I am using VMWare Player VMware® Workstation 16 Player 16.2.3 build-19376536
I installed Ubuntu 20.04 64 bit from the standard iso image published by Ubuntu
Install VMware tool was renamed to "re-install vmware tools" and it is grayed out.
After following few attempts found out the following:
    1. VMWare player automatically installs specific version of VMTools for my installation this is why it says "re-install…"
    2. to update that built-in vmtools package use just like any other apt packages
    $sudo apt [install|upgrade|update|remove|reinstall..etc] open-vm-tools
otherwise use the manual process which is published here
    https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Player-for-Windows/16.0/com.vmware.player.win.using.doc/GUID-08BB9465-D40A-4E16-9E15-8C016CC8166F.html

    I hope that helps.
