How to Uninstall Edge on Windows 10/11. (November 2023)
If you can't uninstall the Edge browser because the Uninstall button is grayed out, continue reading this guide which contains three (3) reliable methods to remove Microsoft Edge in Windows 10/11.
Microsoft Edge is the default browser in Windows 10/11, but like any app it can experience problems and should be uninstalled and reinstalled to resolve them.
But since Edge is a critical part of Windows 10/11, there is no easy way to uninstall it and that's why the Uninstall button is disabled (greyed out).
If you are in such a situation and want to uninstall and reinstall Edge on your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, read the instructions below.
Part 1. How to Completely Remove Microsoft Edge in Windows 11/10.
Method 1. Uninstall Microsoft Edge from Command Prompt.*
* UPDATE NOVEMBER 2023: This method is not working anymore. So, use one of the rest methods to uninstall Edge.
1. Open File Explorer and copy-paste the following path in address bar. Then press Enter.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\
2a. Double-click on the folder named with numbers (which indicates the installed version of EDGE). *
* Note: If you see two or more folders named with numbers, open the most recent one (see the creation date).
2b. Then open the installer folder.
2c. Finally, select the full folder path in the address bar, and right-click > Copy.
3. Now open Command Prompt as Administrator.
4a. Type cd then press Space and then press CTRL+V to paste to copied folder path. When done, press Enter.
4b. Finally, copy-paste the below command and hit Enter, to uninstall Microsoft Edge:
- setup.exe –uninstall –system-level –verbose-logging –force-uninstall
5. When the command is executed, close the Command Prompt window.
6. To reinstall Microsoft Edge, read the instructions on Part-2 below.
Method 2. Remove Microsoft Edge App & Installation Files Manually.
The next method to remove Edge from Windows 10/11, is to delete the Microsoft Edge app folder and its installation files in Safe Mode.*
* Important step to perform before you continue below: Create a System Restore point, to restore your computer if anything goes wrong.
Step 1. Start Windows in Safe Mode.
1a. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run command box.
1b. Type msconfig and press Enter to open the System Configuration utility.
2. At Boot tab check Safe Boot and click Apply > OK.
3. Click Restart and continue to next step.
Step 2. Delete Microsoft Edge Application folder & Installation Packages .
In Windows Safe Mode:
1. Open File Explorer and from the View menu select Show > Hidden items.
2a. Then, navigate to the following location:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\
2b. Delete the following two (2) folders:
- Edge
- EdgeCore
3a. Now navigate to this location:
- C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Local\Packages
3b. Here locate and delete the following two (2) folders:*
- Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge.Stable_8wekyb3d8bbwe
- Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe
* Note: If one of the above folders doesn't exist, (like in this example) it's normal. Continue to next step.
4a. Finally, go this location:
- C:\Windows\SystemApps
4b. Here delete the folder:
- Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe
5. Continue to next step.
Step 3. Start Windows in Normal Mode.
1a. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run command box.
1b. Type msconfig and press Enter to open the System Configuration utility.
2. At General tab, check Normal Startup and click Apply > OK.
3. Read the instructions on Part-2 below if you want to reinstall Microsoft Edge.
Method 3. Force Remove Microsoft Edge from Windows 10/11.
The third method to uninstall the Edge browser, its to completely remove the Edge application from your computer along with its registry entries using the Geek Uninstaller utility.*
* Important step to perform before you continue below: Create a System Restore point, to restore your computer if anything goes wrong.
To force remove Edge from your PC, follow these steps:
1. Using another web browser, download Geek Uninstaller Free. (ZIP file)
2. Then extract the downloaded geek.zip file and view it contents.
3. Right-click on geek application and click Run as administrator.
4. In Geek Uninstaller utility, right-click on Microsoft Edge and select Force Removal. Then click Yes when prompted "if you're sure to perform force removal of this program".
5. In the next window, click Finish to completely remove Microsoft Edge from your computer along with its registry entries.
6. After removal, restart your PC.
7. After entering in Windows, proceed to re-install Edge using the instructions below.
Part 2. How to Install Microsoft Edge on Windows 10/11.
To reinstall Edge use one of the following ways, according your situation:
A. If you have another Web browser installed on your PC (e.g. Chrome, Firefox), do the following:
1. Go to Microsoft Edge Download page and click the Download button.
2. Then double-click at the downloaded file to install he Edge browser.
3. Finally click Install to reinstall Edge on your PC.
B. If you don't have another Web browser installed, do the following:
1. Open the Microsoft Store app and search for "Firefox".
2. Click the "GET" button to install the Mozilla Firefox browser.
3. Open Mozilla Firefox and navigate to Microsoft Edge Download page.
4. Click the Download button, to download the MicrosoftEdgeSetup.exe file.
5. Double-click at the downloaded file to install Microsoft Edge on your computer again.
