I have gone through solution 3 but there is something missing in my machine: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\_________\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
I don't see \policies\. I hope you can help me.

Unfortunately, none of these options worked for me… I have even gone as far as to completely remove our antivirus software, ran Malwarebytes, and nothing has worked… I think my only option is to rebuild the laptop or upgrade to Windows 10, but neither is an option for this end user since they need their PC back. Ugh!!

None of the above Steps worked for me, but changing the Network Location from Work to Public did the Trick for me. Maybe you made the same mistake as me and this helps u :)

The third method works! When UseWUServer is set to 1, the WUServer value is used. Mine is actually pointing to company server. So when I am at home, unless connecting with company VPN, Windows update generates 8024402C error. This is solved by setting UseWUServer to 0, which uses Microsoft server directly.

I had to create UseWUServer, set it to zero and it didn't work, so I changed UseWUServer to 1, that didn't work BUT when I changed it back to zero it worked like a charm – maybe it just needed a reset! Thank you!
